If you think about it, there was probably nothing more daring for a punk band of the early '80s to do than to suddenly introduce new wave synths to its sound, and feature a singer who dressed like he was a member of the Thompson Twins. So from that point of view, you've got to hand it to T.S.O.L., who, for a spell during this time, had no problem embarking on this approach -- in front of sometimes befuddled punk crowds. The 2008 DVD Early Years Live contains a pair of vintage T.S.O.L. performances from 1983, often considered the best era of the group (which would later temporarily transform into a Guns N' Roses-esque metal band by the late '80s). Consisting of shows originally taped for Flipside (an outdoor performance) and Target (an indoor one), all of T.S.O.L.'s early classics are included here -- "Love Story," "The Other Side," etc. And the bonus bits will be of interest to fans as well -- a super-long interview from the same year as these two shows were taped, a performance of "Abolish Government" from 2007 (proof that the chaps still "have it"), and frontman Jack Grisham reading an except from a forthcoming book of his. While they sometimes seem to get lost in the shuffle when discussions of "great West Coast punk bands of the early '80s" come up, Early Years Live shows that T.S.O.L. could easily hold their own on-stage with their counterparts from the era. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
